Beware of Privately Owned Companies Offering Certified Copies of Deeds

JULY 5, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

BEWARE OF PRIVATELY OWNED COMPANIES OFFERING CERTIFIED COPIES OF DEEDS

Hudson County Register, Diane Coleman, is advising all county homeowners to be aware of letters and/or phone calls they receive from privately owned companies with offers to provide certified copies of their deed. These letters or callers tell homeowners their deed was recorded in Hudson County and it is strongly recommended that they keep a certified copy at home. This is not the first time this has occurred in Hudson County or in the state. In 2007, several counties including Hudson sent out press releases and held news conferences to alert homeowners of this practice.

Ms. Coleman wants all Hudson County homeowners to know that they do not need to pay expensive fees to private companies for a certified copy of their deed. “Unfortunately these companies are targeting homeowners, who may already be experiencing financial difficulties, to offer a service they can receive at a much lower cost. This is particularly affecting our senior residents who become fearful they may lose their home if they don’t obtain the copies from these privately owned companies.”

Any homeowner in Hudson County needing a copy of their deed may come to the Office of the Hudson County Register at 257 Cornelison Avenue 2nd Floor, Jersey City, NJ 07302, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM thru 4:00 PM. You may also call (201) 395-4760 or visit our website www.hudsoncountyregister.org if you are unable to come to the office in person.
